Car Stereos: radio installation, car audio accessories, saturn sl2

Question
What wiring harness is needed to install a Dual XC4100 radio in a 1992 Saturn SL2?

Answer
Hi Jim,

Sorry about the delay in answering your question.  A 1992 Saturn uses a Metra 70-1858 GM wire harness.  This is one of the most commonly used harnesses, and either this model or a very similar one should be available at any store that sells car audio accessories.  It's not a specialty or custom harness at all, so I'd probably look for a lower price by shopping for it at a discount store rather than a car audio shop.

There's no harness available to let you connect your Dual head unit to the Saturn radio plug without having to splice any wires.  You'll need to purchase the harness that fits your vehicle, then splice the harness wires to the wiring plug that came with your head unit.  Use solder and shrink-tubing or high-quality electrical tape, or a solderless "crimp" connector.  Don't make your connections with wire nuts, or just twist and tape without solder; and don't use cheap electrical tape.  Also, the best method is to do your splicing on the workbench, before connecting the harness to the vehicle plug.

Hope this helps!
