Answer
Hi,

It shouldn't be necessary to connect the parking brake wire in order to get the unit to switch on.  From the sound of it, the problem is with the accessory power wire.  This is the wire that supplies a key-switched power source; on most head units, it's a red wire.   Before the unit will switch on, you need power on the constant (yellow) and red (switched) power wires, and a good ground connection on the black wire.

For testing, you can try connecting the red wire to the same connection as the yellow wire.  This should allow you to switch the unit on and off regardless of the key position.  If the unit works, then you'll need to find out why there's no power on the red wire connection; you might have to look for a blown fuse in the vehicle fuse box.  If it still doesn't work with the red and yellow wires combined, chances are the unit is defective.

Hope this helps!
