Car Stereos: tl amp set up, active noise cancellation, amplifier system

Question
I have an 07 tl type s. I am trying to connect (2)12' subs with a 500 watt 2ch
amp. how would i go about connecting the amp to the factory navi Head Unit?

Answer
Hi Benjamin,

Sorry about the delay in answering your question.

The easiest option is to install a line output converter (or your amplifier's high-level input wires, if equipped) directly to the factory subwoofer wiring.  These should be accessible at the sub location in the rear deck, or you can catch them at the factory amplifier  in the passenger kick panel area.

Connecting the amplifier system should be pretty simple, but there's another issue that will need to be addressed.  Your TL is equipped with a system called Active Noise Cancellation.  It uses microphones mounted in the vehicle's headliner to monitor low-frequency cabin noise, and it uses the audio system to generate noise-cancelling tones.  There's no way to prevent your after-market amplifier from picking up these tones and playing them through the new subwoofer, resulting in a constant rumbling noise from your subs.

In order to make the new amplifier and sub system work correctly, you'll need to disable the ANC system.  This is done by disconnecting the ANC microphones.  Both are located in the headliner; one at the front of the cabin, and one behind the rear dome light.  I have conflicting information about whether it's necessary to disconnect both microphones; some have reported good results after disabling only the rear mic.

Hope this helps!
