Car Stereos: 2000 Monte Carlo speaker amp, channel amplifier, rca outputs

Question
The amp is model #10532571, original amp in car. When the amp is hooked up it is draining the battery, and the speakers static when you check ground . Would this be caused by the speakers, the radio, or the amp? If it is the amp, can it be replaced with an after market part?

Answer
Hi Luther,

Sorry about the delay in answering this question.

I'm not sure what you mean by "speakers static when you check ground", or how you've determined that the amplifier is draining the battery.  Generally, a speaker is only going to play sounds that it's sent by the amplifier; a defective speaker can distort the sound, but it won't produce sound on its own.  So if you're getting staticky noises through the speakers, then it's likely to be an amplifier or head unit problem, not a speaker problem.

Your factory amplifier uses high-level inputs from the head unit.  This means that it's possible to bypass the amplifier entirely and let the head unit drive the speakers on its own.  This might be a way to troubleshoot the system; you can unplug the amplifier, wire in some jumpers in the amplifier harness so that the speakers are connected directly to the head unit, and see if your problems continue.

If you wish, you can replace the factory amp with any after-market 4-channel amplifier, but if you're keeping the stock head unit you'll want to choose an amp that's equipped with speaker-level inputs.  There are no RCA outputs available on the stock radio.

Hope this helps!
