Question
Car Stereos: pairing subs to an amp, memphis subs, watts rms
memphis
QUESTION: i have a jl audio e1400d mono amp and i was just wondering
what would be the best choice for a sub for this amp. i want
to do two 12's and even found two memphis 12's but im not
sure if my amp can push both of them. the product number for
these memphis subs is 15-PR12S4. they are 1000 watt subs.
thanks and i look forward to hearing from you.

ANSWER: Hi Corey,

From what I can tell, the Memphis subwoofers you've picked should be a perfect match for the amplifier.  Because they're 4-ohm subs, when you connect them both to the amplifier you'll have a 2-ohm load at the amp.  Your amp is rated for 500 watts RMS at 2 ohms.  The power produced by the amp will be divided evenly between the subs, so at rated power each sub will get 250 watts RMS.  This exactly matches the subs' power rating.

When matching an amplifier and subwoofers, you should always look at the RMS power ratings, and ignore "peak" or "max" power ratings.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: how hard will this set up hit? i used to have mtx terminators
and i just hope the memphis subs will hit harder.

Answer
Hi,

Sorry about the delay in answering this question.  Unfortunately, I really can't predict which subwoofer system would be louder; I don't have any personal experience with either the Memphis or the MTX subs.  The biggest thing you can do to make a difference in the subwoofers' output is to make sure that you're using an enclosure that matches the manufacturer's recommended specs as closely as possible. This is especially true if you're using a ported box.

Hope this helps!
