Car Stereos: amp and subs, dodge ram quad cab, kicker cvr

Question
QUESTION: my buddy has a kicker zx750x1 hooked up to two kicker cvr 800rmsx1600peak 2ohm dvc subs. sounds great but i have the same amp and want the same speakers is 2 or 4ohm best for this amp

ANSWER: Hi Rodney,

This amplifier is rated best at 2ohm.  This means, if you get 2 dual coil subwoofers, you'll want to get 2 ohm per voice coil subs, then wire the coils in series, and the subwoofers in parallel, giving you a 2ohm circuit:

So it will go:

Negative off the amp -> negative on sub one, voice coil one.
Positive on sub one, voice coil one -> negative on sub one, voice coil two.
positive on sub one, voice coil two -> positive on amp.

Negative off the amp -> negative on sub two, voice coil one.
Positive on sub two, voice coil one -> negative on sub two, voice coil two.
positive on sub two, voice coil two -> positive on amp.

This will give you a 2ohm circuit since 2x2 in series = 4ohm per sub, and then the subs hooked up in parallel: 1 / (1/4) + (1/4) = 2ohms.

QUESTION: are the 2 800rms speakers good or do i need 2 400rms. i want the most bass possible. going in my back seat dodge ram quad cab. what kind of box is best sealed slot port ect. THANKS

Answer
It's a 750x1 W amp, so 2x400 subs should be just fine.

As for box type, that's all personal preference.  Accurate, right, hard hitting bass generally comes from sealed, but pure volume and SPL come from ported.  And you can tune the box differently based on port.  As the box builder those questions to get the box that's right for what you want.
