Car Stereos: VRVD630 CD/dvd player trouble, internal amplifier, pontiac grand prix

Question
QUESTION: I am installing a VRVD630 CD/dvd player in my 97 pontiac grand prix and I can't get any sound to come through the speakers.  Do I have to hook the parking brake wire up to get an audio signal to come through ? And do I "have" to hook it to my e-brake ?

ANSWER: Hi Matt,

The e-brake connection shouldn't have any effect on the audio output; the only thing it will do is prevent you from seeing the video signal if you're playing a DVD or a video source unit.  Even if it blocks the picture, you'd still be able to hear the audio.

Your problem may be caused by a speaker wiring issue; if you have one speaker wire that's pinched or shorted, it will kill the sound to all the speakers as the head unit's internal amplifier shuts down.  It might also be caused by a factory amplifier, especially if your Grand Prix was equipped with a factory Bose audio system.  In this case, you'd need a special adapter to make the new deck work with the Bose amplifier.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Would you know what may be causing the problem of no audio ?  I had a plain CD player in it to begin with and it played fine. When I hook up the VR unit it plays dvd's and CD's and even has sound coming through the RCA jacks in the back, just none through the wires for the car speakers. Did I just buy a junk DVD player off my friend ?

Answer
Hi Matt,

Just to be sure, you should inspect the wiring at the back of the unit; make sure none of the speaker wires connections are bare, and that the wires don't have any pinched spots.  Sometimes if wires get trapped behind the deck when you push it into place, or if electrical tape comes off one of the connections, that's enough to short the speaker wire and kill the deck's output.  From what you're saying, though, I suspect that your DVD player has a defective internal amplifier.
