Answer
What is the best way to store RV batteries when the RV not being used for a long period of time. For example during winter months when the temperature can go as low as -40 Degrees F.

Remove from RV, charge fully with a battery charger, and store until spring.

Should they be removed from the RV ?

Yes

Should they be charged regularly ? If so how often ?

Charging regularly is not necessary, and usually not recommended.

What happens if you use regular car batteries for the RV ?(Vice deep discharge)

RV batteries are meant to run accessories for periods, and be recharged often.  Car batteries cannot take this 'abuse'.  A car battery will work to start and run the RV.  But will not last very long being used as RV battery applications.

What helps batteries to last a long time ?

Keep them stored off the ground, especially not on concrete.  Keep them warm, like a basement for winter.  Keep them clean.  Crud on the battery can cause the posts to contact eachother.  This creates a circuit and starts discharging the battery.

What causes batteries to fail prematurely ?

Improper storage, lack of use during summer months.  Once installed in the RV, they should be charged up occasionally.

How long can I expect batteries to last ?

The manufacturer will have a life expectancy on the battery.  You can expect the battery to die a couple of months after this date.  Seems comical, but in reality, this is the case.  They last long enought to keep you from being able to claim warranty.  Unless improperly cared for.
