Question
Last year the speakers in my Trailblazer started failing. Factory standard stereo. I replaced all four speakers with 5 1/4" 3-way speakers. Now I'm looking into replacing the head unit and I'm wondering about the tweeter locations that are on the dash. I think they are for the Bose system (which I don't have). Are there aftermarket speakers that will fit those holes so I can have a higher-mounted set of tweeters to go with the new head unit?

Answer
Hi John,

You can find quite a few 1" tweeters that can be adapted to the factory tweeter locations in  your Trailblazer.  You'll need to make sure the tweeter set you buy includes an in-line crossover, or a built-in crossover, so that you're not sending bass to the tweeter.  As long as you have the crossover, you should be able to wire the new tweeters in parallel with the front speaker wires.

You can find 6-1/2" and 5-1/4" component sets; these include a woofer, tweeter and 2-way crossover.  With this type of system, you could replace the current door speaker with the woofer component, and mount the tweeter in the factory location.  This might result in a better sound than just adding additional tweeters and keeping the existing door speakers.  If you keep the 3-way speakers in the door, and add dash tweeters, you'll end up with the dash and door speakers producing the same high frequency output.  This can have a negative effect on the sound.  A component speaker system would send the bass and midrange to the door speakers, and the high frequencies to the tweeters, so that you're not getting the same sound from multiple drivers.

Hope this helps!
