Car Stereos: Car Speakers Staticy and Cut In/Out, alpine head unit, channel amp

Question
System Setup

Alpine Head Unit
6.5" Rockford Component (All four doors)
Powered by a 4 Channel Amp
2 10" Polk Subs
Powered by a 2 Channel Amp (Bridged)

I have had the system installed for 2 years now and recently all  the door speakers have gotten real staticy and cut in and out. The subs are working fine without any interference. I have checked all the connections on the amp, plus the ground and all appear to be good. Any advice?

Answer
Hi Stephen,

Sorry about the delay in answering this question.

From what you're describing, I'd suspect there's a problem with the 4-channel amp, or possibly one of the component speakers has a problem that's affecting the amplifier.  A defective speaker, defective crossover or pinched/shorted speaker wire can cause this type of problem.

You might try disconnecting the speakers from the amp, and re-connect them one at a time.  Do you still have problems when only one or two speakers are connected?  See if you can isolate the problem to one particular speaker--a shorted speaker wire can overload the amp and you'll hear the effects through all the speakers, but if you can get it to play normally with three speakers and you only have problems when you connect the fourth, then that gives you a pretty good idea where the problem is.  Of course, if it continues to act up regardless of the speaker configuration, then that might tell you the amplifier needs to be serviced.

Hope this helps!
