Answer
Hi,

To connect an after-market amplifier to a factory radio, you'll either need an amplifier with a high-level input feature (not found on most Rockford amps) or a device called a line output converter.  Either way, you'll be making connections to the factory speaker wires.  If you're connecting a subwoofer amp, the easiest place to make the connections is at the rear speakers under the rear deck in the trunk, or at the factory amp (if equipped) under the trunk liner behind the driver's rear wheel well.

You can find a line output converter at any store that sells car audio equipment.  The converter connects to the stock speaker wires, and produces a low-level signal that can be connected to the after-market amp with RCA cables.  You don't need to disconnect the stock speakers to use a line output converter.

Hope this helps!

Brian

P.S.  In a 99 Grand Am, your stock radio is technically a 1.5 DIN, not a double-DIN.  You wouldn't be able to install an after-market double-DIN head unit without some dash modification.
