Towing Issues: 4 Runner Towing Package, tekonsha prodigy brake controller, toyota 4runner

Question
Shayne,

I have a 2002 Toyota 4Runner Limited. I bought the vehicle new and ordered it with a towing package. Only now am I setting up to tow a travel trailer. The connector on the back is a small square 4 prong device. This cannot be for a trailer hookup and a local performance shop has confirmed that.

I will be towing a TrailManor travel trailer and the factory tells me that the trailer electrical plug for the brake controller, lights etc. is a 7 way blade connector. I plan on installing a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller on my vehicle.

Based on what I''ve told you what do I need to do to properly set up my vehicle for the travel trailer connector and the Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller.

Thanks for your help and I hope I''ve been sufficiently clear.

With regards,

Dan

Answer
Dan,

Toyota did not start pre-wiring their 4Runner for brake controls until the 2003 model year.  You will need to wire the brake control front to back.

You will need to run two wires (10-12GA) from the brake control through the firewall and all the way to the back of the vehicle.  (watch out for the catalytic converters, they are right next to the frame)

Unless you are very sure of your abilities I would have a professional handle this one.  It will not be a simple plug-in job.

Good Luck,
