Car Stereos: Speaker whine intermitent, 07 chevy tahoe, rear tweeter

Question
I have a 07 Chevy Tahoe with the Bose system, every once an awhile, once a mile or so there is a speaker whine that appears to be coming from the d/s rear area.  I have replaced the factory amp and the problem still exists.  Just wondering if you have any ideas as to where to go next, it is starting to become a bid headache.

Answer
Hi Brent,

Unfortunately, I don't really have a good answer for you on this one.  The design of your factory audio system makes it difficult to isolate the problem.

About the only idea I'd have would be to reverse the left and right outputs at the factory amp: literally, cut the left and right rear channel output wires, and re-connect them in reverse.  Then listen to see if the problem seems to continue on the same side, or switch to the other side.

If you reverse the output wires, and the problem moves to the passenger side, that indicates that the problem may be in the factory radio, or the wiring between the factory radio and the amp.  On the other hand, if the problem continues on the driver's side, then it indicates a problem in the speaker wire or speakers.  (The rear door woofer and rear tweeter on each side are driven from the same amplifier channel, so a problem with the wiring might affect both speakers.  However, if you can pinpoint the noise to just one speaker or the other, then the speaker itself might be the cause of the problem.  One way to test this might be to temporarily disconnect the rear tweeter, just because it's fairly easy to access).

Assuming that the issue doesn't originate in the stock radio, it's possible that the problem is caused by a speaker wire or signal wire that's intermittently being shorted or grounded.  My instincts say that this would be most likely between the head unit and the amplifier.  It's just a wild guess, though.

Hope this helps!
