Car Stereos: GM-5400T, dual voice coil, watts rms

Question
Hi Brian,

I have a Pioneer GM-5400T amp and I was wondering: what sub is a good match for this?

Answer
Hi Shawn,

Your amplifier can produce 380 watts RMS into a 4-ohm load when bridged; so if you're looking for a single sub, then the ideal match would be one that can be wired for 4-ohms, and can handle around 400 watts RMS.  This could be a 4-ohm single voice coil (SVC) sub, or a 2-ohm dual voice coil (DVC) model.  There aren't many SVC subs that are rated for (and can realistically handle) 380 watts RMS, so I'd look at the DVC models, assuming you're looking for a single subwoofer.

There are a lot more good subwoofer models, compatible with your amplifier, than I could list for you.  If you want to stick with a Pioneer system, I'd suggest one of their 12" Champion series DVC subs, such as the TS-W308D2, or Premier TS-W1208D2.  Either of these would be a perfect match for your amplifier.  Another possibility is the dual 2-ohm version of Alpine's Type-R subwoofer; the 10" and 12" versions are rated for 500watts RMS, but they should still work effectively with your amp's power output.

Hope this helps!

Brian
