Car Stereos: installin avh p3100 with gmcr-01 harness, 2002 chevy cavalier, rear view camera

Question
QUESTION: I have the pioneer avh p3100 and I'm trying to install it using the gmcr-01 harness with chimmer. Is this possible and if so, can you send me a color code for the harness or a diagram of what the install is sapposed to look like?

ANSWER: Hi Rod,

Do you mean a GMRC-01?  If so, what kind of vehicle are you installing this into?

The wire colors that come with the GMRC-01 adapter should, for the most part, match the wire colors in the Pioneer harness.  There are a couple wires from the Pioneer harness that won't be connected to the GMRC-01; particularly the light green parking brake wire, and the pink (?) reverse wire connection.  These must be connected to the respective wires elsewhere in the vehicle, although the reverse wire connection is only needed if you're installing a rear view camera.

Otherwise, just match the Pioneer wire colors up with the GMRC-01 wire colors, and splice the wires.  Any unused wires should be insulated so they can't cause a short.

Here are links to a couple instruction manuals that may help you:

QUESTION: Hey Brian. I did mean the gmrc-01. I hope didn't confuse you. I'm doing an custom install in an 2002 chevy cavalier. So I splice all the wires that match in color? On the harness there's an org/ wht wire and a solid orange. Which one is the dimmer? Thanks for answering so fast. I apreciate the advice.

Answer
Hi Rod,

Yes, you should be able to just match the wire colors on the head unit to the wire colors in the harness.  Usually, I'll connect the after-market deck's orange/white wire to the harness' orange wire in these vehicles, although either will work.  The difference between the harness' orange/white and orange wires is this:  both wires will show voltage when the lights are turned on, but the orange/white wire voltage will vary with the dimmer switch, while the orange wire voltage will remain constant.  The head unit's illumination circuit will work better with the constant voltage source, but it doesn't matter all that much--in fact, if you left the orange wires disconnected altogether, the system will still work.  An illumination connection just dims the display when you turn the vehicle's lights on.  Be sure to insulate whichever wires you aren't using.

Hope this helps!
