Car Stereos: alternator whine, noise suppressor, toyota 4runner

Question
I have a 1988 Toyota 4runner i just put a stereo system in it. I have 2 amps. 1 for the speakers and another for my subs. Both amps are performance tekniques. The head unit is made by alpine. When i turn the stereo up i can hear the whine from the alternator only when the truck is running and i would like to get rid of it if i could. What's the best way to do that?

Answer
Dean, That is a fairly common problem.  The first thing to do, is to be sure your work is correct.  Be sure your ground wires are as large or larger than your power wires.  Then, make sure your ground wires are as short as possible.  The shorter the ground, the less chance there will be for electrical noise to reach your equipment.  That should fix the problem.  If it doesn't, you may need to get a noise suppressor for your power wire to clean up the power going to the stereo and amps.  Hope this helps, Scott
