Car Stereos: Subwoofers, 2005 chevy aveo, chevy aveo

Question
Hi, I am looking to install a Sony 12" XS-LE121W 1000 watt/ 300 rms subwoofer into my 2005 Chevy Aveo and was wondering if this subwoofer will shake my car and what specific type of amplifier I will need to install this subwoofer?

Answer
Hi,

I haven't heard particular sub in operation, so I can't really predict how it's likely to sound; but I've heard a 10" shallow-mount Sony subwoofer/box combo.  A 12" sub should be somewhat louder, but I wouldn't expect it to shake the car.  In a small car like yours, I think it will give you a pretty good bass level inside, but it's not something you'll be able to hear down the street.  If you're looking for a balanced overall sound with plenty of low-end punch, it should be all you need; if you want to turn heads, this probably won't do it.

The best amp for the job would be one rated for around 200-300 watts RMS at 4 ohms.  This could be a mono amplifier, or a 2-channel amp used in "bridged" mode.  A 2-channel amp would probably be a bit less expensive, but a mono amp would be more useful if you plan to upgrade the subwoofer system later on.

When you're shopping for an amp, ignore "peak" or "max" power ratings.  I'd recommend sticking with amplifiers that are CEA-2006 compliant; this means that the power rating follows an accepted standard, so you can be sure the amplifier can produce its rated power.  When looking at 2-channel amps, look for the 4-ohm "bridged" RMS power rating; with mono amps, you won't see a bridged rating, but you'll probably see one rating for 4 ohms and another for 2 ohms.  Look for a rating between 200 and 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms.

Hope this helps!
