Car Stereos: installation question, line output converters, cigarette lighter

Question
QUESTION: I have a 08 GMC Canyon.  Getting ready to install sub and amp, would like to use factory head unit.  Can you tell me if my factory unit has rca and remote jack, if not what is the best way to install w/ out buying aftermarket unit.  Is there a better way to set up other than buying an adaptor for these, have always heard you loose sound potential using these adaptors.  Thanks for your help.  Zac

ANSWER: Hi Zac,

Your factory head unit does not include any RCA outputs or a suitable wire for an amp remote connection; so I think a line output converter is the best option if you want to keep the stock system.  I don't agree that you'll lose any significant sound quality by using a converter, compared to an after-market head unit.  I've installed countless subwoofer systems using line output converters, and I can honestly say that you really can't tell the difference.

Your best bet is a line output converter that also includes a remote trigger circuit, so it turns on your amplifier when it detects an output on your factory speaker wires.  An example of this would be PAC's SNI-45T adapter.  In many vehicles, I'll just connect the accessory power wire to a key-switched power source, but in the Colorado and Canyon just about everything is controlled through the data bus system, rather than switched power wires.  In this case, a current-sensing trigger system is the best option.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Thanks for your help Brian.  I purchased the PAC SNI-35 so I should be good to go.

Answer
Hi Zac,

The SNI-35 is similar to the SNI-45T, but does not include the remote trigger feature; so you'll need to find a power source for your amplifier's remote wire.  My experience in these vehicles tells me that you might have a hard time finding a power source that switches off with the key.  You might have to connect your remote wire to a constant power source, like the cigarette lighter; and install a toggle switch so you can turn it off manually.  If you do this, I'd make it a lighted toggle switch so you remember to switch it off.  If you forget to switch off the amp, you'll drain the truck's battery over time.

Good luck!
