Car Stereos: speaker size, lincoln vehicles, ford lincoln

Question
Do you know the factory speaker sizes for a 1981 Lincoln Mark VI?

Answer
Hi Shaun,

It took me a bit to track this one down.

According to my information, the replacement speaker sizes in the Mark VI are 3-1/2" in the dash, 5-1/4" in the doors, and 6x9" in the rear deck.

From my experience in older Ford/Lincoln vehicles, I can tell you that the door speakers are probably a bit larger than at typical after-market 5-1/4".  In fact, you might be able to fit some 6-1/2" speakers in the opening; a few after-market 6-1/2" speakers are made with a relatively small cone and broad mounting plate, to allow them to fit in a wide range of vehicles.  Of course, any 5-1/4" speaker will fit, but you may need to build a mounting plate or find another way to fill the gap around the speaker, for best results.

It's likely that the vehicle originally used a common-ground speaker wiring system, which wouldn't be compatible with a modern after-market head unit; so if you're replacing the stock radio, you might want to plan on running new wire to each speaker.

Hope this helps!
