Car Stereos: car stereo speakers, car stereo speakers, plastic triangle

Question
Trying to install new speakers in my 1998 Honda Accord.  How do I get covers off front door speakers?  Also,  Which is which wire in the Honda?  I can't figure out their color code.

Answer
Hi Tom,

You can't just pop off the speaker covers to replace the front speakers in an Accord; you'll have to remove the entire door panel.  To do this:

1.  Pry off the small screw cover inside the door release handle, and remove the screw.  Slide the door release assembly forward to get it free of the door; disconnect the lock rod and unplug the power lock switch.

2. Pry off the screw cover inside the door pull cup and remove the screw.  Pull off the door pull cup and switch panel; unplug the switches, and remove.

3. Pry off the plastic triangle at the top of the door panel behind the mirror.

4. Remove the small plastic fastener at the top front corner of the door panel.

5. Pry around the sides and bottom of the door panel to release the clips holding the door panel to the door.  Once all the clips are free, lift the panel off the top of the door; unplug the door panel light, and remove the panel.

The factory speaker is a special design that incorporates a factory spacer.  You may need to use a 1/2" spacer when installing an after-market speaker into the stock location, because of the shape of the speaker opening in the door metal.

According to my information, the left front door speaker wires should be blue/green (+) and gray/black (-); the right front door speaker wires should be red/green (+) and brown/black (-). You can purchase adapter harnesses that let you connect after-market speakers to the factory plugs without any cutting.

Hope this helps!
