Car Stereos: Memory Wire?, memory issue, radio harness

Question
I bought a after market stereo and cant seem to keep the memory on it everytime i turn it off it starts all over. I hooked up a yellow cable to the radio fuse and just kept the red power wire to the power but everything works fine its just the memory issue. Am I using the wrong wire or what am I doing wrong? Thanks Much.

Answer
Hi Johnny,

The yellow wire should be connected to a constant power source that doesn't switch off with the key.  The key-switched power source should be connected to the red wire.  It sounds like you may have them mixed up, right now; so I'd try reversing the yellow and red wire connections.  If that doesn't work, it probably means that neither wire is connected to a constant power source.  Depending on the car, you can probably find a constant power wire at the cigarette lighter, ignition harness, or radio harness; if all else fails, you can extend the yellow wire to the positive battery terminal and connect it there (be sure to put a fuse on the wire near the battery terminal, if you do this).

Hope this helps!
