Car Stereos: replace radio?, 2005 buick lesabre, static problem

Question
I have a 2005 Buick LeSabre, OnStar, that has static in the Delco AM/FM/CD/Cassette radio.  It also has very poor AM reception.   Is it possible to replace the radio with an after-market unit that will connect to the “docking” connection used with that radio?  If so, what are some favorable models?  Will I be able to maintain steering wheel controls for the radio?  Is this a good option, or should I replace the unit with an original Delco AM-mono-FM-stereo-CD player "UN0"?

Answer
Don,  After researching your problem, it has become apparent what the problem is.  The OEM radio can be replaced with an aftermarket unit, but it will take a custom install shop to do the job correctly.  The shop should be able to use an adapter to keep your steering wheel controls.  I think you can only adapt certain aftermarket models.  A static problem is difficult to troubleshoot without changing stuff out.

If I were in your position, I would try and locate another OEM model that I could plug into my car and see if it fixes the static problem.  If so, I would stick with the OEM radio.  If it does not fix the static problem, then I would look into getting an aftermarket unit installed.  It may need not solve the static problem, but if there still is a static problem, it will be easier to fix the other parts with an aftermarket stereo to work with.  You can rule out the connection to be the problem, so you would know that there is some break in the antenna wire itself, and it needs to be replaced.  Hope this helps, Scott
