Car Stereos: Jaguar Audio System, jaguar s type, mb quarts

Question
I have a 2003 Jaguar S-type that I purchased used. It came with the standard audio system. There is nothing really wrong with it except that the audio quality is not what I would expect. The audio system on my worn out 2001 Saturn L-series sounds better.

What would be the least expensive way of upgrading the system? Compared with the newer cars out these days, this system sounds kind of muffled, puts out very little bass, and has poor sound clarity.

What are the weak links in this cars system? Is it the speakers or the receiver? Or both?

I have had very little luck finding out how my system is set up.

Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Henry

Answer
Henry,  The weakest link in any OEM system is the speakers.  They are made to a very low standard, and in most cars, you can tell.  The best improvement to your system is going to be replacing the stock speakers with some MB Quarts.  If those are too much, try Infinity or Polk Audio.  You won't believe the difference.  Also, just for reference, OEM stereos are built by some of the best Audio companies in the world, and replacing a stock stereo with an off brand, or cheapo, stereo may be a step backwards.  Hope this helps, Scott
