Car Stereos: Remote entry/Remote starter annoyance, purple data, convenience functions

Question
QUESTION: Hello Brian.  Glad I found this resource.

I have a 1999 Chevy Suburban and just installed a DEI Ready Remote remote entry/starter, model #24927.

Install went just fine, and I used a DEI 1700g to bypass factory Passlock (assuming I have factory security - I'm honestly not sure that I do). I'm only using the remote start and remote entry. The unlock button works all doors only (no driver's door preference) and I'm not using any of the accessory outputs.

Everything works as it should except: Start the vehicle (with the remote OR the key), and several seconds later the interior (dome) lights come on and stay on.

I'm just not sure what it is that I wired incorrectly.....

Just got off the phone with Tech Support at DEI, and was told to simply disconnect the brown wire from my dome light circuit.  I'm okay with that, because I'm not necessarily after an alarm here - just remote entry/start.

Still hasn't solved my problem. Now I'm a lil' stumped. Spent 20 minutes on hold to get that useless info....though DEI support is very helpful.

Any advice?

ANSWER: Hi Ian,

That's kind of a strange problem; and it's doubly strange that it's happening when you start the vehicle with the key, and not just when the remote starter is active.  Personally, I'm kind of suspicious of the 1700G.  My own experience with the 1700G module has generally been good, though I've typically used it with the 2003+ model year.

I can tell you that your vehicle is certainly equipped with the Passlock II anti-theft system, so the 1700G (or some other type of bypass module) will be required for remote start.  In your model year, the only function of the 1700G is to bypass the Passlock system--it doesn't do anything for the door locks, panic mode, or any of the alarm or convenience functions.  Because of this, the only wires from the 1700G that should be connected are the red (+12v), black (ground), blue (remote start input) and purple (data wire connection).  If any of the other wires are connected--particularly the green door trigger wire, or gray/black dome light monitor--I'd disconnect them.

If that doesn't work, I'd try unplugging the 1700G altogether, and see if you still get the dome light staying on when you start the vehicle with the key.  (You won't be able to remote start the vehicle with the 1700G unplugged).  If the 1700G turns out to be the culprit, there are different modules that can be used to bypass the Theftlock system, such as a 556L or XK06.  In fact, it can even be done with a pair of relays and a resistor.

Hope this helps!

Brian

QUESTION: Hmmm.....

I was quickly looking at my install, and I'm not 100% sure I have the blue wire (remote start input) from the 1700g hooked up correctly.

The instructions call for it to be connected "to a ground that stays at ground the whole time the vehicle is in remote start mode".  I have a small bird's nest of wires under the dash now, and I will have to check, but I'm thinking I don't have that wire connected properly.  It's been a couple of weeks since my install (only drove during the day so far, so it took me a while to realize the dome lights were on.  Stupid, I know) so I don't recall all of my connections off the top of my head.

I know it sounds strange, but could this be causing my issue?  Can you recommend a proper connection for this blue wire so I can confirm I have it hooked up correctly?

It's all worth I shot, I think!

Your time and effort so far are much appreciated!

Answer
Hi Ian,

The blue wire from the 1700G should be connected to the status output from the remote start unit.  On your Ready Remote model, the wiring diagram shows this to be a white/black wire.  The correct wire should test with continuity to chassis ground when the remote start is activated, and stay that way until the remote starter is switched off again (for example, if you remote start the truck, then turn the key on and press the brake pedal prior to driving away, the remote starter shuts off when you press the brake pedal--even though the engine is still running).

If this is mis-wired, I can't see how it would cause the problem with the dome light.  The most likely result of an error here would be that the remote start sequence would fail, because the 1700G wouldn't activate and bypass the Passlock system.

Good luck!
