Car Stereos: CD/DVD/TV/RADIO Has no sound, internal amplifier, independent repair

Question
QUESTION: I intalled this PYLE flat screen dvd player. Parts number PLTSN74. It was working for about 3 months, than one day I took a sharp turn and heard static from the speakers like they touched metal. Than it started smelling like smoke so I pulled it out. It smelled burnt from where the CD player harness plugs in. The next day I installed it again taping everything correctly. The CD player turned on,the screen pops up and the touch screen works. It plays the DVDs but there is no sound. I tried connecting a speaker directly to the CD player but it didnt work. I got my old cd player and it works perfect so I know its not my cars wiring. So my question is, is the harness fried or is the CD player burnt and no good. Thanks for the help any advise on what I should do would be really apprecheated. Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Jimmy,

I'd be willing to bet that the deck's internal amplifier has failed.  The amplifier IC is typically mounted to the rear wall of the chassis, near the wiring socket, so that would explain why the smoke seemed to come from that area.  I'm fairly certain that the problem is in the head unit's amplifier, not the harness or wiring.

Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Is this repairable? Or is it better just to get a new one? How much does this usually cost? Thanks

Answer
Hi,

If I'm right and it's just the amplifier IC that's defective, then it should be reparable, but I couldn't really say what the cost might be.  Repair services are outside my expertise.  If there are other electronic components on the circuit board that have been damaged, then the repair costs would go up.  I'd suggest taking the player to an independent repair shop, and see what they tell you. I did notice that refurbished units can be purchased through Amazon for about $200, for your particular model.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!
