Car Stereos: signal processor, dual voice coils, gmc sierra denali

Question
Brian, I couldn't answer your question it said to many follow-ups?? Anyway. my vehicle is a 2009 GMC Sierra Denali with Bose and navigation. I'm going to use a Memphis 6ix procesor. What/where are the sub wires, ground and lead?

Answer
Hi Chuck,

In your truck, the "subwoofer" is a small, dual voice coil driver aimed forward at the front of the center console.  The easiest place to find subwoofer wires (and all other speaker wires) is at the factory amplifier, located under the rear part of the center console under the storage compartment.  Because the subwoofer wires run directly from the amp to the sub, you'll definitely need to take the center console apart to get to the wires you need.

If my information is correct, it looks like the amplifier has separate outputs for front left, front right, rear left, rear right, and subwoofers.   There's also an output for the center channel speaker, but you probably won't be using this at all.  It doesn't appear that there are separate outputs for the door woofers and front tweeters; instead, it looks like it's a full-range output that's split to the separate drivers through passive crossover filters in the wiring.   This should simplify the processor connections, as long as you catch the signal before it goes through the passive crossovers--another good reason for connecting the processor's inputs right at the factory amp.

Here's what I have listed for the amplifier output wire colors in your truck:
Left front  (+) tan
Left front  (-) gray
Right front (+) light green
Right front (-) dark green
Left rear   (+) brown
Left rear   (-) yellow
Right rear  (+) dark blue
Right rear  (-) light blue
Center      (+) yellow/black
Center      (-) light blue
Subwoofer 1 (+) dark blue/white
Subwoofer 1 (-) light green/black
Subwoofer 2 (+) dark green
Subwoofer 2 (-) light blue/black

The subwoofer 1 and 2 refers to the sub's dual voice coils; there's actually only one subwoofer, but it will have four wires running to it.  Also, note that light blue is used more than once in the amplifier output wiring, so your installer might need to do some testing to verify the correct wire.  There will also be at least two other wires carrying the audio signal from the head unit, but they're a fixed output signal and won't be of any use to you.  There should also be a wire connecting the amplifier to the vehicle's data bus, as well as one or more red/white power wires and black ground wires.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "ground" and "lead" connections; I haven't used the Memphis processor, and I wasn't able to get an owner's manual to study.  Hopefully the wire list above will include the information you need.

Hope this helps!

Brian
