Car Stereos: 2004 Grand Prix GT, rca cables, line output converter

Question
Hi Brian,

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GT, and I am hoping to install my amp + sub to the factory system. I have installed previously on my old car with a new head unit. Would like to keep stock headunit in this car. Wondering if there is wiring that would allow for addition on the amp + sub, and also to add a port for my Ipod too?

Thanks a lot!

Answer
Hi Glen,

You're actually looking for two different adapters: one device to let you use your iPod with the factory radio, and another to allow you to install an after-market amplifier.  You won't find a single device that will let you do both with your particular application.

For the amplifier connection, you just need a standard line output converter, available at any car audio store.  I'd recommend picking a model with output level adjustment capability.  The easiest way to use a line output converter is just to connect it to the speaker wiring at the rear speaker locations in the trunk.  Then you can run RCA cables from the line output converter to your amplifier's RCA inputs.

If you happen to have an amplifier with high-level inputs, you don't even need the line output converter: just run some wires from the amp's high-level inputs to the factory speaker wires.

As for the iPod connection, I'd look at Peripheral's ISGM73 adapter.  This should work in your vehicle provided your factory radio is XM-ready (most are in the Grand Prix).  If your stock radio has an "XM" or a "Band" button, it should work.

Hope this helps!

Brian
