Car Stereos: 03 Audi A4 Amplifier, minute job, audi dealership

Question
I have a 2003 Audi A4 with the Audi Symphony audio system. The radio has been cutting in and out, which happens when I use any feature including a tape or CD, for a few months now. I took it to an Audi dealership and they said that the amplifier was broken and it would cost $1,200 to replace. I have a friend who can install it if I buy the amp myself, but how do I know what amp it is?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hi Kristin,

I don't have a lot of details about your particular audio system, but replacing the amplifier should be very easy: it's just a matter of unplugging and removing the amp, then plugging in and screwing down the new one.  I can't see it being more than a 15-minute job even for a fairly inexperienced person.  The cost involved is mostly just the price of the new amp, and while they're quite expensive, $1200 seems wildly inflated.

The Symphony system is available in a Bose version, or a non-Bose.  I checked Parts.com for the price of a replacement amplifier, and the price difference between the two amps is pretty extreme: they offer the non-Bose amplifier for about $180, and the Bose amplifier for around $543.

Your best bet is probably to remove the amplifier and look for an identifying part number.  Unfortunately, I didn't get a clear idea of where the amp is located, although it should be in the trunk area if you have a sedan.  If I had a chance to inspect the vehicle, I'm sure I could find it pretty easily; and that should be true of just about any car audio installation technician.  If you're having trouble finding the amplifier, I'd suggest stopping by an installation shop.  Of course, your dealer's parts department may be willing to give you the part number as well.

Once you have the part number, you should be able to find a replacement amplifier at an online replacement parts vendor (like Parts.com) or even on eBay.

Hope this helps!
