Car Stereos: 2009 Dodge Journey, dodge journey, infinity sound

Question
Have standard factory unit, is it considered double din?  Do I have to have a special harness for aftermarket units?  6 Speakers not the infinity sound system.

Answer
Hi Ray,

The factory radio in the Journey is considered a "Corporate double-DIN", which basically means that a typical after-market double-DIN head unit will fit using an adapter kit.  Metra makes a kit for your vehicle; the part number is 99-6511. According to the kit instructions, installing an after-market double-DIN unit may require cutting a metal bracket in the radio cavity.  (This shouldn't affect the appearance of the re-assembled dash).

Here's a link to the mounting kit instructions:

As for the harness, you have a choice there.  The only difficulty with your wiring would be in the fact that there's no accessory power wire in the factory radio plug.  (After-market head units require a key-switched power connection; the factory radio in your vehicle is controlled directly by the vehicle's data bus, so there's no need for an accessory wire).  You can use a standard 07+ Chrysler adapter harness (Metra 70-6522), and find an accessory power source elsewhere in the vehicle.  In most Chryslers, the cigarette lighter outlet can be set up for key-switched operation, so the accessory power connection might be as easy as tapping into the cigarette lighter wiring.  However, if you want to make the installation easier, you can purchase a Metra XSVI-6522-NAV harness.  This will link to the data bus and generate an accessory power connection for you.  Also, unlike the standard wire harness, this adapter also includes wires that are used for in-dash navigation system connections.

Finally, you'll also need a 40-EU10 antenna adapter for the AM/FM antenna connection.

Hope this helps!
