Car Stereos: no sound on radio, chevy silverado, factory speakers

Question
2005 chevy silverado with bose stereo system and it just quit playing no sound, chimes, etc. someone said amp might be gone, if i change radio to aftermarket do i have to get a amp?

Answer
Hi Doug,

It's hard to say whether the problem is with the factory head unit or the amplifier.  It might even be caused by a bad speaker; if one of the speakers has a shorted voice coil, it can sometimes cause the amplifier to shut down.  This is uncommon, however.

To answer your question, you don't need to add an after-market amplifier if you decide to replace the head unit.  You can connect the factory speakers directly to the head unit's speaker outputs, although it would take some extra wiring.  The exception is the factory subwoofer: if you want to keep this working, you'll need to add an amplifier or keep the factory amp in the system (if it works).

Hope this helps!
