Car Stereos: 2003 suburban, rear cargo doors, competition car audio

Question
What is the best amps and subs to put in my 2003 chevy suburban that already has a bose system inside? i am looking for alot of bass but also looking for clarity. I want to hear all the words even if i am a mile away. Also i do not want any trunk vibration to be heard on the outside of the vehicle. thanks ahead of time if you can give me this information.

Answer
Hi Juan,

There are so many good subs and amps available that I wouldn't be able to recommend a particular one.  In my opinion, the specific subwoofer and amplifier that you select isn't as important as the quality of installation--particularly the design of the subwoofer box.  If you're looking for maximum output without a boomy or muddy sound, then you'll want to have a custom, ported box designed and built for your system.  A local shop that specializes in competition car audio can assist you with this.

It's probably unrealistic to expect to hear the words from a mile away.  You'd need a concert-type PA speaker for that type of application, not a subwooofer.  A subwoofer is just made to play bass; you shouldn't be able to distinguish words from it, under any circumstances.

The trunk vibration will depend on your vehicle, not your audio system design.  You may have to seal or reinforce various areas like your license plate or the gap around the rear cargo doors.

Hope this helps!
