Car Stereos: speakers, stock speakers, factory speakers

Question
QUESTION: could you tell me what the wattage is of the factory speakers are in a 2007 pt cruiser. i want to add a new stereo 4x53 watts. can these handle it,and will it be clear.

ANSWER: Richard,  Your OEM speakers are specifically built to handle the power of your OEM stereo.  Furthermore, OEM speakers are the weakest link in an OEM system.  If you just want to improve sound, you would start with the speakers, because OEM stereos are actually high quality sounding units built by high-end manufacturers like Alpine and Infinity.  Your stock speakers will probably not blow with your new radio, but they will be blaring if you crank it up all the way.  The only reason you should replace your OEM stereo, is if it doesn't have the features you are looking for.  Many aftermarket stereos will not sound as good as your factory stereo does.  I hope that answers your question and gives you alittle insight before you change something and are dissappointed if it doesn't sound as good.  If anything is unclear or you need more info just keep asking.  Good Luck, Scott

QUESTION: what wattage, and should it be two way or three way speakers.thanks for all your help.also are they 6.5 inch.

Answer
Normally, when stereos are rating their power, they will publish 4x53 watts.  That is not an accurate number.  Actually, the real measurable wattage of the radio is usually about half the stated amount.  It is stated in "rms" watts.  The published power is just the companies guess at what the unit may put out in an instantaneous moment.  The "rms" watts is an actual test the company must use to test the power of the unit with a certain percentage of distortion.  Anyways, Most Stock and aftermarket stereos are between 15 and 30 "rms" watts.  So, you can buy any speakers 30 rms watts or over, and they will work fine.  As for 2 way or 3 way, it is all personal preference.  I would suggest checking out different brands and 2 or 3 ways at your local stereo shop.  Speakers that are known for their sound quality are Infinity and MB Quart.  It is best to listen to as many as possible and determine which ones you like best.  There are a couple of tricks to help.  First, when you hear cymbals, they should sound like cymbals not hissing.  Second, when you hear a fast drum solo or fast fingered piano, you should hear every note.  If it sounds blurry, then it is not as good as it could be.  Also, it is a good idea to take your own cd with you, so you know what it normally sounds like and are familiar with the songs.  Yes, I think your car uses 6.5 inch speakers.  The stereo shop should have a catalog that tells you what is exactly in your car.  Have fun, Scott
