Car Stereos: amp, sony xplode, dc volts

Question
I have a nitro 1000w amp and when I turn my car on the light that will light up red for standby and green for power blinks red and then stays unlit but when I take the fuse out of the amp the led lights in the amp come one but little power/standby light is still off... can you help me figure out what the problem is?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Sorry, but I couldn't find much information about your amplifier.  The Nitro brand seems to be owned by a company called American Hi-Fi Industrial 26; they operate a website at www.rockwoodhifi.com, but there's no support information to be found there.  From the looks of it, this is the same company that produces "Rockwood" and "Xplore" branded audio equipment, which appears to follow a marketing strategy of making products that look like well-known audio brands (such as Rockford, or Sony Xplode).

In any event, I wasn't able to obtain an owner's manual for your amplifier, so I'd have to fall back on basic amplifier troubleshooting.  To do any troubleshooting of an amplifier, you'll need a digital multimeter. First, disconnect the speakers. Set the meter for DC volts; put the black probe on the amp's ground terminal, and test the voltage at the main power and remote terminals.

If you're getting a reading at or near 12 volts on both these terminals, and the amplifier still isn't turning on, then you have a defective amplifier.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!
