Car Stereos: Stock speakers not working, 1999 chevy lumina, chevy lumina

Question
QUESTION: Hi, i has a 1999 Chevy Lumina. About 2 months ago i installed 2 12" subwoofers and aftermarket radio. Everything worked fine. A couple weeks after i installed it i was driving and the sound from all stock speakers cut out and all you could here was bass. A few minutes later the sound came back. It just happened again and its been a few days and still no sound... this time they cut out while i was driving down a very bumpy dirt road. They subwoofers work i just have no sound in the 2 front door speakers and all you can hear is the bass please help me out.

ANSWER: Austin,  I would say that your stereo has an internal short.  Probably a component has become loose, and is not making a good connection any more.  It will need to be repaired for about $50 - $100 at a shop.  Otherwise, the only other problem may be that one of your connections behind the radio has come loose.  This can be checked while removing the radio for repair.  Hope this helps, Scott

QUESTION: thanks for your help. I was shocked when I found the problem I would never have guessed. Maybe anyone else who has this problem you could possibly give them this tip. all I did was wiggle all of my rear stock 6x9 speakers wire and all of a sudden I had sound in all speakers.

thanks

Answer
Great.  I figured it might be a short.  Usually, it has to do with whatever component was just added, but sometimes it can be anywhere.  If I were you, I would check out those wires you wiggled, and see if you can find the one that is loose, and fix it.  It may keep from shorting out a component later.  Thanks for the followup.  I will remember.  -Scott
