Car Stereos: subwoofer wiring, kicker l7 15, ohm subs

Question
I have 2 kicker L7 15" DVC 2 ohm subs. And a kickerZX1500.1 amplifier. I believe its 1500W at 2 ohms and 750W at 4 ohms. Its monoblock but has 2 positives and 2 negatives. How exactly do I wire the subs in the box and to the amp? thanks

Answer
Hi CJ,

The ZX 1500.1 only has one channel, and one positive, and one negative terminal.  Are you sure someone just didn't put a splitter on it or something?

In any event, just ignore one of the sets, and only use the other -- it's only a 1 channel amp anyway.

Your best bet is to wire the 2 2ohm voice coils in parallel on each subwoofer, to create 1ohm of impedance on each subwoofer, and then hook both subwoofers up to the one channel in series, creating a 2ohm circuit.

So the wiring would go like this:

S1 = subwoofer 1
S2 = subwoofer 2
VC1 = voice coil 1
VC2 = voice coil 2

S1VC1(-) -> S1VC2(-)
S1VC1(+) -> S1VC2(+)
S2VC1(-) -> S2VC2(-)
S2VC1(+) -> S2VC2(+)

S1VC1(+) -> S2VC1(-)

Amp(-) -> S1VC1(-)
Amp(+) -> S2VC2(+)

That should give you a 2ohm circuit.  Test the wires before hooking them up to the amplifier to make sure there's 2ohms of load across -- if I've made an error in typing this out, or you've made an error in hooking it up, you don't wanna fry anything.  A cheap multimeter can be had for $10, but you can almost certainly find a friend who has one you can borrow for 5 minutes if you don't have one.
