Car Stereos: amp-sub matching, dual voice coils, mono amp

Question
Hi, Scott. If I have one sub with dual voice coils and I want to use a mono amp to wire the voice coils in a parallel config., should I match the RMS of the amp to the TOTAL RMS of the speaker or the RMS of just ONE of the coils(which I'm assuming is half of the TOTAL rms watts)?

Answer
Jason, The subs are rated as a total, so you would want to match the total "rms" watts of the speaker with a one channel amps "rms" watts at the same ohms.  If you wire the coils in parallel, you are cutting the ohms in half.  If each voice coil is 4 ohms, then bridging in parallel would make it a 2 ohm system, so you would check your mono amp for it's 2 ohm "rms" watts rating to match the speaker's "rms" watts.  Hope this helps, Scott
