Car Stereos: Replace radio.1999 Mazda, flat blade, salvage yard

Could you outline the procedure to removing and replacing the radio in my car 1999 mazda 626, am/fm/cassette/cd, not the Boise. This is fctory unit for replacement from SALVAGE YARD.

Hi Loyd,

This car is about as easy as it gets for radio replacement, assuming you have the right tools.

If you look closely at the left and right edges of the factory radio, you'll see that there are small plastic covers on each side, about 1/4" wide.  You can pry these off using a precision flat-blade screwdriver or a pick tool.  Underneath you'll find two holes on each side.  These are for use with standard Ford-type DIN radio removal tools, like these:

They're available at many car audio or auto parts stores (or even the car audio section at Wal-mart).

Insert the removal tools into the holes until you feel them engage with the radio spring clips.  Flex them away from each other to bend the clips inward.  You should then be able to pull the deck right out.

Unplug the power, speaker and antenna connectors from the back of the old deck, plug them into the new deck, and push it back into the opening until it clicks into place.  That's it!
