Car Stereos: Car Stereo Problems, hertz speakers, alpine swe

Question
QUESTION: Alright Scott, I've got a Alpine SWE-1042 Sub, and A Sony 1252gtr Amp. I've also go Hertz Speakers in the front, and Alpine Speakers in the back of my 1995 Acura Integra. I installed the Sub and Amp, and everything seemed to be fine.
Then I noticed that the amp would turn on and off. Could it be underpowered? I used 8gauge 1000 watt wires for installation.
The worst of all, is that now the front and rear right side speakers randomly stopped working right after installing my sub and amp.. I have NO idea what happened. Any advice on where to start first?

ANSWER: Brett,  Thanks for the in-depth description.  It is very helpful in determining what is going on.  You definitely have the right size wire for the amp.  My first instinct says that you may have a wire shorting somewhere, or a ground wire not grounding properly, causing the equipment to malfunction.  The randomness of the problem is the key.  If the amp is turning on and off when it is cranked up and hitting hard, then it might be shutting down as a safety device that it uses to keep from ruining the components inside.  If that is the case, amps usually start distorting noticeably before they start cutting out, and I would suggest turning down the amp gain until the distortion goes away.  But first, I would definitely go through and check all connections and wires.  Hope this helps, Scott

QUESTION: Thanks, that helps. Any ideas on why the Speakers quit as well? Should I check the wiring there as well, or is that problem related to my sub install?

Answer
I would say it depends on where the sub signal wires were wired from.  If you tapped into the speaker wires at the speakers, that is probably the problem area.  If the headunit has a separate output for subs, and it was used, then it may be two separate issues.  I am guessing the wire splices have worked loose.  So, if you find the problem, it should fix both issues.  Good Luck, Scott
