Car Stereos: 2004 Dodge Durango Amp, 2004 dodge durango, fuse panels

Question
QUESTION: I am having issues with the sound on my stereo. My alternator went out and at the same time it was going out my sound stopped working on the radio. After replacing alternator and reconnecting battery, still no sound. All other functions are working properly with the radio, except no sound. I took it to a radio shop and they told me that my amp must have burn out.

My question is where the amp is even located? And if there are any alternatives to fixing the problem. Or do I need to buy a factory amp?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Jeff,

Because you have a factory amplifier, it's completely possible that the amplifier's fuse has just blown -- it usually has a separate fuse from the rest of the audio system.   Check that first.

If it is in fact shot, whether you choose to replace it with factory or aftermarket is entirely up to you.  Both are very possible.  Aftermarket would probably be more work and money for the extra work you'd have to do to make it work, but it would sound infinitely (ha!) better.  A new factory amp you'd just plug in.

I believe the amplifier is underneath one of the rear seats.

QUESTION: We located the amp in front passanger side console. Would the fuse be in there, or with the other fuses?

Thanks.

Answer
Could be either, could be both.  Check the amp for fuses first, and then check both fuse panels (there's likely to be one in the steering column, and one under the hood).  Look for a fuse that is specifically marked 'amp' or 'radio amp' or something like that.  It should have its own fuse independent of the radio's fuse (and likely be higher rated, too).
