Car Stereos: car stereo, antenna wire, bare wire

Question
My car stereo stopped playing FM.  I thought tuner went out, i could still pick up AM and could play cd's.  I installed new stereo and same thing except now no AM either but can still play cd's.  bought new antenna and still nothing.  I'm baffled.

Answer
Adrian,

Usually when FM goes out, there is a bad connection with the aerial.  Since you have replaced the radio and replugged in the antenna wire, we know it is not just loose.  So, I would say there is a wear spot or a broken spot in your antenna wire.  Many times, if the wire takes a sharp corner, the wire inside can break and you cannot see it on the outside of the cable, or there is a rub spot that has finally rubbed through the insulation and now the bare wire is showing.  Most times it is not too fun replacing that wire, but that most definitely is the problem.  When putting new wire in, be sure not to force or stretch it through, or it will be broke before you even get to try it.  Hope this helps, Scott
