Car Stereos: 2 speakers, 1 sub, 1 amp., dual voice coil, component speaker system

Question
ok i thought i was a expert in car audio, in my car i have 2 subs 2 amps and 4 speakers but now im putting a stereo in my truck and i want to have 1 amp running 2 speakers, and 1 sub, just to give it a little bump, i would like it to be clarion, what would you say would be the best setup for running 1 set of speakers(front) one sub, and using only one amp?

Answer
Hi Rodd,

You can do this pretty easily using a 4-channel amplifier.  This is often called a "3-channel" configuration.  Two channels are used to run the two front speakers in stereo mode, and the other two channels are bridged into a mono output for the subwoofer.  The front speakers can be 2-ohm or 4-ohm designs; the subwoofer must be a 4-ohm, single voice coil type, or a 2-ohm, dual voice coil.

Clarion currently has two 4-channel amps in its lineup:  The APX4241, and the APX4361.

According to its published specs, the APX4241 can produce 60 watts per channel for a pair of 4-ohm front speakers, and 100 watts RMS for a 4-ohm sub.  I'm not sure if you're planning on a complete Clarion system, or just a Clarion amp.  This amp would work well with (among others) the SRQ-1620S component speaker system, and an SFW1051 or PFW1051 shallow-mount subwoofer.

The APX4361 can produce 90 watts for each of the front speakers, and 320 watts for a subwoofer.  It would work well with the SRU-1720M component speaker system, and a PXW-1051 sub.

Hope this helps!
