Car Stereos: Blown 2002 Jeep Liberty speaker, ohm models, infinity speakers

Question
QUESTION: When trying to find an after market similar speaker, I only find 2way speakers.  The speaker that blew is a single woofer cone with no central mid or tweeter. Can I use a 2 way speaker in it's place effectively? (assuming it is still a 2 Ohm speaker)

ANSWER: Jim,

Yes, most aftermarket speakers that will fit your car properly are made to replace the factory speakers.  Factory speakers are made very cheaply, and any replacement will probably be a great improvement over what was there.  Enjoy your new speakers, Scott

QUESTION: Well, OK, thank you Scott.  You are most likely correct but I've been told that the Infinity speakers in the Jeep Libertys are very high quality speakers.  That is a direct contradiction to your comment.  But, if you are correct, I can throw any two way, 2 ohm speakers in and I should be OK?  Jim

Answer
Yes, any speakers that fit the hole will work.  Yes, the factory infinity speakers are better than the regular factory speakers, but any factory speakers, whether they are infinity, bose, or polk are made very cheaply.  They are the weakest link in the factory systems.  As far as the 2 ohms part of the question, I doubt you will find any normal size speakers that are 2 ohms.  Most are 4 ohms and there are a few 8 ohm models.  The ohms is the resistance that the speaker puts on the sound signal.  The larger the number, the higher the resistance.  The more resistance the quieter the speaker is at the same volume level.  The lower the resistance, the louder they sound.  However, when the resistance gets too low, too much sound signal is returned to the stereo and gets it hot.  I recommend 4 ohm speakers made by Alpine, Polk, or Infinity.  I think you will be greatly impressed by the difference.  Good Luck, Scott
