Car Stereos: XM Radio Installation in 2008 Subaru Outback, subaru outback, decent chunk

Question
Hi - I just bought a 2008 Outback 2.5i Limited.  The stereo control has an XM option on it, but it is not "ready" - no antenna, etc.  Subaru tells me $500+ to install.  I do not want to do this myself, but I want to go to a BEstBuy or CarToys or someplace and be able to ask intelligently for what I want.  I want to use the factory "faceplate" for the stereo, which has text capabilities, etc.  Also the dials have an "XM" option.  Don't worry about subscriptions; I understand that since I have XM in my house and another car, which was all ready when we bought it.  So, what is it I'm asking for, and what should I be prepared to pay?

Answer
Hi Betsy,

Unfortunately, I'm unaware of any aftermarket hardware that'll allow you to use the Subaru controls and factory deck with an XM system.

That said, a decent chunk of the pricetag for the install that Subaru wants is probably for their ovepriced labour whish is likely to be > $100/hour.

If that's the case, you can buy the hardware from them (my guess is in the $300 range), and take it to a reputable install shop to do the work for you for closer to $50 rather than $150+.

I'd avoid Best Buy and CarToys and other such places, as in my experience, they hire just about anyone and I've personally had to unbreak things that their installers have horribly mangled.

Ask around people in your town.  Inevitably you'll find a decent car stereo shop with knowledgable people and installers working there.  Visit them instead.
