Chrysler Repair: serpentine belt comes off when it rains, serpentine belt, dodge caravan

Question
Hello! Every time it rains, my serpentine belt comes off of my 98 Dodge Caravan. Is there anything I can't do to fix it, or even better, prevent it?

Answer
Hi Kelly,
There is a 'front wheelhouse splash shield' (or wheel well liner) between the right wheel/tire and the belt area on the front of the engine. That shield has probably been compromised for one reason or another. Basically it is the inner liner of the fender housing and its lower edge may be damaged or detached. So take a look at it after removing the wheel.  You can either go to a dealer parts department and ask the counter-person to look up the item and part number on the computer and show it to you on the screen for consideration of how to repair or replace (price and identification #). If it seem too costly then you could go to a pull-it-yourelf wrecking yard and get a used one. That part, once reattached/ repaired/installed, will prevent the belt detachment from happening again.
