Car Stereos: subs, single coil, 1996 ford explorer

Question
I have the 1996 Ford Explorer, i realized it was the sub in the very back of my car that blew, at least  I think its a sub and I want to know what kind I need to replace it. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Matt,

You can actually replace it with whatever you like.  If you want the same size/fitment, you'll have to ask the dealer for the sizes/dimensions, as most factory subwoofers are 8 or 10".

But you can chuck a 12" in there in a new box if you want.  It just needs to be single coil 4ohm resistance.  Even if the factory amp is only outputting 300w or something, and the subwoofer is rated for eleventy-billion like most subwoofers these days, it'll work just fine, it just won't be powered full-throttle.
