Car Stereos: stereo, factory stereo, shop time

Question
My factory stereo's sound quits. When it comes back on sometimes it starts out real quite then gets louder. Everything is working, radio, cd playeer and cassette player but no sound. When you turn it on and off you can here the power hit the speakers but no sound. How hard is it to remove the stereo so I can clean the plug in connections or can you access the wireing plugs without removing unit?

Answer
It sounds as if your stereo has a short inside the radio.  Most of the time with this type of problem, a connector soldered on the inside of the radio has come loose.  The radio will have to be removed and taken apart to repair the connections.  Most of the time, there are only one or two panels that need to be removed to remove the radio.  Sometimes the panels can be a little tricky, because they hide screws very well.  The good news is that the repairs should only cost about one hour of shop time, whatever the rate is around your area.  Hope this helps, Scott
