Car Stereos: subs and amps, resistance ohms, caigslist

hi, im trying to get the right equipment from caigslist and dont want to get burned!i am looking to hook up two kicker 12"s and need to know what else to get by way of amps wiring kit/gauges and component speakers . also do the components need an amp to?any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Theron,

For 2 kicker 12s, you'll simply need an amp that can power them.  Check the wattage and resistance (ohms) of the subs, and make sure you get an amp that can reasonably power them.  It's all basically personal opinion anyway, and how loud you want it to be, etc.  You can hook up an amp that's rated higher, the same, or lower than the subs.  You'll just have to adjust the gain accordingly, and might not use the subs 100%.  That's OK too.

For a wiring kit, it depends on the power of the amp, but a 4 gauge amp kit will be more than adequate for just about anything you buy.

And whether or not you need an amp for your component speakers is entirely up to you.  If you feel that your deck isn't making the component speakers loud enough, and they can handle more power, amplify them!
