Car Stereos: Finding the prefered amp, sony xplod amp, watts rms

Question
I have two 12" sony Xplod subs with the power rating of 1200 watts "max" or "peak" (350 rms) and im wondering which amp would be the best one for them. I have a friend who told me the 1200 watt peak power sony xplod amp will push them both perfect, is that tru or do i need two of them? orrrrrr would one amp to power both be better? as u see im all over the place, set me strate please:)

Answer
Hi Shea,

'Peak' power ratings are marketing babble and should be thrown away and ignored entirely.  If it were up to me, it wouldn't even be legal to use them because they're so misleading.

All you need to care about is the RMS power output.  If your subwoofers can handle 350 watts RMS each, you're going to want an amplifier that puts out approximately 700 watts RMS total @ 350 per channel.  That said, you can go with whatever size amp you want below or above that.  If you go below, you won't be able to get it as loud as the subs can handle, and if you go above, you'll have to turn down the gain to get the right level the speakers can safely handle.

One amp to do it all will be fine.

Good luck,
Justin
