Honda: check engine light, egr valve, honda accord ex

Question
-------------------------
Followup To There is no problem with drivability. The mechanic says the engine is fine. The last tune up was about 7000 miles ago.The last valve adjustment was about 20000 miles ago.The code for the egr is 56. I didn't ask the code for the MAP sensor. The mechanic said he got the code for that sensor and when he checked the OHMs it was needing replacement. You have to drive it for about 5 miles before the light comes on but this is the same as it was before anything was replaced. I've had it to the shop and back three times, first the sensor then the valve then looking at the wire connections and each time the mechanic said it was OK and each time the light came back on as soon as I drove it home. I'm very frustrated plus out a fair bit of cash. I have the original cat and in addition to fixing the car to get the engine light off I will have to replace the cat I'm sure. Can this car be saved? Thanks

I have a 1992 honda accord ex. The check engine light is on so I can't pass smog here in callifornia. My mechanic checked it for codes replaced the MAP sensor and the EGR valve and checked the wires but the light is still on. Any ideas? Thank you. Oh and the car has 245,000 miles and has never had problems with passing smog before.

Hi donna,I,m gonna need more info on this one.what code is it,give me any driveabilty complaint you may have with it,does the light come back on right away after starting or clearing the code?what is the general condition of the engine, when was the last good tune up(including valve adjustment)   thx,Ray

Answer
Hi donna, sounds like your mechanic is stumped and is just trying to blow you off, otherwise he would drive it that 5 miles, realize the problem still exists and not give up on the problem.I never heard of a code 56(it just may be that it's not a honda code and i dont recognize it)the honda code for e.g.r. is a code 12.anyway,have him check the e.g.r. control solenoid, when it opens to deliver vacuum to the e.g.r. valve the valve should get at least 6 inches of vacuum within 1 second.if it doesnt and the vacuum hose to the valve is ok(#16 hose)and the vacuum source to the conrol solenoid is ok replace the solenoid.  lemme know, Ray
