Car Stereos: Radio Exchange, cassett player, resistance ohms

Question
I have a 1983 Nissan Pickup with a non-working AM/FM radio and a 1994 Nissan PU with an AM/FM Cassett player. Can you tell me how to wire the radio-cassett into the '83 ?  Or, even better, where can I find an online wiring diagram for the radio-cassett?

Answer
Hi Dale,

http://www.installdr.com/ has a list of wiring schemes for vehicles.  The only issue might be the '83 Nissan.  Due to its age, you might have to simply find the wires yourself.  It's not that tough.

First, get a multimeter, and set it to VDC.  Put the black wire from the multimeter against the frame of the vehicle, and touch the wires in the harness one by one with the red end.  Do this with the car off.

You should find one wire with 12V on it.  There's your 12V constant wire.  Write it down and continue.  Next, set the vehicle to accessory, and start again.  When you find another wire that has 12V, turn off the car and test it again.  It should have 0V.  You've just found your 12V accessory.  Next, check all the rest of the wires to make sure there's no other power.

Next, turn off the vehicle entirely, and pull the radio fuse.

Now, set the multimeter to resistance (ohms), and start searching for pairs of wires that have 4ohms across them.  These are speakers.  When you find them, get two pieces of bare wire, touch one end of each piece of bare wire to either side of a AA battery, and the other side to the two wires with 4 ohms across them.  Rub your finger along the battery while connected.. you should hear static out the speaker that you're connected to.  Write down which speaker you've found and continue until you find all of the speakers.

Next, put the black lead from the multimeter on the chassis again, and touch the remaining wires with the other end of the multimeter.  You should find one that has (close to) 0 ohms resistance.  This is your ground wire.

With that, youll have identified all of the wires needed to put the other stereo into your truck.

Good luck,
Justin
